How To Prevent Brocolli Bolting / Flowering

READERS QUESTION:

"I've recently planted broccoli and it's gone to flower before it's even ready to pick...why?"

The simple answer is heat!

Adelaide had a cold snap a couple of weeks ago, perfect for planting these winter veggies. But the last week or so, has been sunny, with warm days and fairly warm nights compared to the weeks prior.

And it's this warmth that makes the plants think that it's spring and that it's time to bolt - or flower and go to seed.

It's not the sun though that is the problem, it's that the the soil is too warm.

So to try and prevent your broccoli from bolting try these tips:

1- plant away from fences or anywhere that will warm the soil up

2- even though it's winter keep the plants well watered

3- mulch will help keep a more consistent soil temperature

Try the tips and hopefully you will have broccoli that will grow to size and not bolt!
