Creating A Backyard Farm Part 1 - Planning

Planning. This is probably the most important part of turning your yard into a backyard farm!
This for me is both exciting and hard. Exciting because we get to choose what we want our garden to look like, where we want things to go, and what exactly will go into the garden! It's also the hardest part because the excitement gets the better of me and I want it all done yesterday! My husband on the other hand is patient and level headed, and will always do things as they need to be done and in the correct order!

Below I have attached a picture of our garden plan. For us fruit trees and vegetable gardens are important, so is a good sized lawn area for the children to play, flowers to attract pollinating bees and birds, room for our dog and our chickens, and that it all has structure. So we measured out the yard, we used a house plan to help us get things to scale, and looked and what would fit and what wouldn't - unfortunately cows and sheep wouldn't haha! We checked how much sun or shade certain parts of the garden got - would the trees or vegetables be suitable there? We had to check what permanent structures were already in place, where was the underground plumbing etc. and would that effect where we wanted to place trees etc? All this is part of the planning process. There is no point wasting your time or money - and finding out you cannot dig there or a particular plant wouldn't be suitable to that area!

So if you are looking at being your journey to turn your garden into a suburban farm, producing fruits and vegetables, with room for chickens and a dog - then get out that paper and pencil and start planning! You might be surprised what you can actually fit - get creative!

Part 2 of this series will talk about permanent and underground features.

Enjoy!
